I'm talking about Monosodium Glutamate (MSG).

What if there were something added to some of your food that makes you gain weight? Well, there is. - monosodium glutamate (MSG).
Consider what this chemical does to rodents.
There is no strain of naturally obese rats. So when scientists want to study fat animals, they create them by injecting newborn rats with MSG. As a result, the animals' pancreases develop abnormally and they secrete triple the normal amount of insulin. This causes food cravings, increased fat storage, and obesity.
In humans, MSG is also clearly linked to weight gain, as well as to diabetes, migraine headaches, neurological and behavior disorders, autism, asthma, ADHD, and hormonal dysfunction.
To eliminate MSG from your diet, you'll have to avoid virtually all fast food and chain restaurants and most processed foods. If it comes in a can, a bag, or a box, there's a good chance MSG is in it. (Just one more reason to eat whole, unprocessed foods.)
So why is it being added to our food?
Turns out that it's very beneficial ... for food manufacturers, that is. MSG creates an addictive response, making you crave and eat more of the foods that have this chemical in them.
The lobbying group for MSG manufacturers even promotes this fact on their website , stating, "Studies have found that adding MSG to certain foods, such as soup and mashed potatoes, has been successful in increasing the food intake in institutionalized elderly populations." Well, it's good to know that Grandma won't be passing up her second helping of mashed potatoes.
Don't count on being able to easily identify MSG on food labels. There are more than 25 different terms which indicate its presence, including: natural flavoring, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, autolyzed yeast, calcium caseinate, sodium caseinate, gelatin, maltodextrin, potassium glutamate, and textured protein.
As always, if you want to eat healthy (and curb your unnatural food cravings), avoid fast food and processed food entirely.
